The Estero El Salado Protected Natural Area, comprises an area of 68 hectares (168 acres) directly connected to the ocean through a narrow channel. This urban estuary is comprised of marshes containing three species of mangroves; the rest is made jungle bordered by aquatic and subaquatic vegetation, prickly forest and secondary vegetation. All of this is located in the middle of Puerto Vallarta! More than 100 bird species have been recorded, and reptiles like the American Crocodile, Black Iguana, plus fiddler and stone crabs make their home here. Many warbler species, flycatchers, heron species—including Boat-billed Herons—and the elusive Rufous-necked Wood-Rail have been recorded.
This is an excellent photographic opportunity!
